Is Jesus God? Part 2

John 8:56-58 (NIV) - "Your father Abraham rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day; he saw it and was glad.” “You are not yet fifty years old,” they said to him, “and you have seen Abraham!” “Very truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born, I am!” "

In John 8:58, Jesus claimed to be the "I AM". In Exodus 3:14, when Moses asked God who are you, God said "I AM, WHO I AM". So Jesus not only claimed to be the I AM of Exodus but he also claimed that he pre-existed before Abraham and that Abraham saw Him.

What Jesus said in John 8:58 is explicitly clear. In the original Greek language, what Jesus said in John 8:58 is "ego eimi" (ἐγὼ εἰμί), which actually means "I, I AM" It's not translated that way becuse that's not proper English. So Jesus basically said: "before Abraham was, I was 'I am'. " When the Jews heard this, they sought to stone Him because they knew He was placing Himself in the position of God.

I will now show you a condensed list of attributes of God that Jesus claimed to have in the Gospel:

  • Jesus claimed to be able to forgive sins (Mark 2:5-11 and Luke 5:18-24.)
  • Jesus claimed to have pre-existed the world and have the same glory as the Father according to:
John 17:5 - "And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began."
  • Jesus claimed to be the resurrection and the life (John 11:25) and that He will ressurect the dead in the last day (John 5:25-29; 6:39, 44, 54).
John 11:25 (NKJV) - "Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live."
  • Jesus claimed to be the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6). He claimed that the only way to Heaven and the Father was through him only.
John 14:6 (NKJV) - "Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me."
  • Jesus claimed to be the door to everlasting life (John 10:7-9).
  • Jesus claimed to be the 'Light of the world' and that he gives the 'Light of Life' (John 8:12).
John 8:12 (NKJV) - "Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”
  • Jesus claimed to be the key to eternal life (John 3:16; 6:40) and that he has the authority to give eternal life to those who believe in Him (John 17:2).
John 17:2 (NKJV) - "as You have given Him authority over all flesh, that He should give eternal life to as many as You have given Him."
  • Jesus claimed to be omnipresent, that he would be present untill the end of the world with His followers (Matthew 28:20).
Matthew 28:20 (NKJV) - "teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen. "
  • Jesus claimed to be the one who will judge the world (Matthew 7:21-23; 25:31-32; John 5:22).
Matthew 25:31-32 (NKJV) -- " “When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the holy angels with Him, then He will sit on the throne of His glory. All the nations will be gathered before Him, and He will separate them one from another, as a shepherd divides his sheep from the goats. "
  • Jesus claimed to be able to answer prayers (John 14:13-14)
  • Jesus claimed to have all the authority in Heaven and on Earth (Matthew 28:18).
Matthew 28:18 (NKJV) - "And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. "
  • Jesus claimed that everyone must honor Him just as they honor the Father (John 5:23).
John 5:23 (NKJV) - "that all should honor the Son just as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him."
  • Jesus claimed to be the bread of life (John 6:35).
John 6:35 (NKJV) - "And Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst."
  • Jesus claimed to come down from heaven (John 6:38,51)
  • Jesus claimed to offer rest to humanity (Matthew 11:28)
Matthew 11:28 (NKJV) - "Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest."
  • Jesus claimed to own everything that the Father owns (John 16:15).
John 16:15 (NKJV) - "All things that the Father has are Mine. Therefore I said that He will take of Mine and declare it to you. "

Jesus affirmed the commands in the Old Testament Scriptures (Exodus 34:14; Deuteronomy 6:3) that people are to worship and serve God, and God only (Matthew 4:10; Luke 4:8, yet Jesus Himself accepted worship from others that is due only to God: Matthew 14:33, 28:9, 28:17; Luke 24:51-52; John 9:38.

In the following verses "bowing down" and "knelt down" is showing that He was worshipped: Matthew 8:2, 9:18, 15:22, 25, 20:20. Jesus was worshipped as a baby in Matthew 2:11. These 3 wise men worshipped Jesus because they knew Jesus was the fulfilment of the prophecy of Micah 5:2.

Jesus fulfilled the prophecies in the Old Testament of God (Yahweh) coming to Israel in the form of a man, and Jesus even affirmed this as well.

Isaiah 9:6 (NKJV) - "For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. "

In Isaiah 9:6, there is a prophecy of a Son who will be born. This Son is Jesus and this Son is called "mighty God," which is El Gibor (גִּבּ֔וֹר אֵ֣ל) in Hebrew. This is a title only attributed to the true God. In the very next chapter, in Isaiah 10:20-21, it calls the LORD (Yahweh in Hebrew) "El gibbor." So again, Jesus is equated to Yahweh.

Micah 5:2 - "“But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, Though you are little among the thousands of Judah, Yet out of you shall come forth to Me The One to be Ruler in Israel, Whose goings forth are from of old, From everlasting.

Micah 5:2 is written over 500 years before Christ was born. The prophet Micah prophecised that the eternal Messiah would be born in Bethlehem. In this prophecy, Micah said the One to come would have everlasting origins; His origin would be from eternity. Jesus fulfilled this prophecy in Matthew 2:1 when he was born in Bethlehem. Moreover, just being born in Bethlehem does not qualify Jesus as the fulfillment of the prophecy, but it is the fact that Jesus claimed to be God in the Gospel and he fulfilled the other Old Testament prophecies that says the LORD will be pierced for the sins of the world (Isaiah 53).
